Hi everybody,
We've got 8 seedlings each of Jericho romaine lettuce and red leaf lettuce. Beth and Anna will be putting these out for 3 hours this afternoon in the shade before bringing them back in. We hope to plant these this weekend.
The 55 X 5.5 raised bed is built and the interior is filled with soil and manure compost. We'll be getting another shipment in a week for filling in the exterior holes (in the concrete blocks). We'll also be building 2 more raised beds, though much smaller.

1st raised bed built! Pictures coming soon
I built the 1st bed of our raised garden bed system. Only 7-10 more to go. Here's what I did:
- Enough cardboard on the ground to cover a 35 sq ft area
- 32 - 16 x 8 x 8 cement blocks. These are stacked 2 high in a rectangle shape on top of the cardboard
- 1200 pounds of topsoil
- 120 lbs of cow manure compost
All the dirt and manure went into the middle. I'll fill the holes of the concrete blocks later on for planting flowers. Gray blocks in the front yard are ugly so I'll paint them green once the weather warms up.
I planted 3 rows of 13 seeds for spinach and one row of 13 seeds of swiss chard. I should be adding a 2nd row of chard today.

We added a 2nd grow light
We picked up a used Aero Garden light system for $50. One bulb needs replacing but the other is servicing us nicely.

Our indoor seeds have started to come up
Hi everybody,
Welcome to Guy and Beth's! On 2/26 we had started many of our vegetables indoors under a grow light. This week we've had several lettuces, 4 cucumber, and one tomato plant sprout to life. Want to know what we've started indoors?
- 9 Early Siberian tomatoes
- 9 Golden Delight tomatoes
- 6 Yellow Pear cherry tomatoes (leftover seeds from last year)
- 12 Gourmet sweet peppers (orange)
- 5 Marketmore 76 cucumbers (leftover seeds from last year)
- 8 Super Jericho romaine lettuce
- 8 Royal Red leaf lettuce
Most of the plants are exposed to a south facing window but we are also using a 24 watt grow light. All the seeds were planted in organic potting soil fertilized with worm castings.
